December 22nd/23rd Game Summaries
|
Kent, WA December 26, 2007 – The Christmas holidays played havoc with the reporting of game results and their related statistics. Wrapping presents got in the way here and there. But, finally, except for a couple of exceptions, everything looks good to go and we’re going to press. What you see is what you get. Blame the omissions on Santa.

Weekend Game Summaries |
In hockey news this week, the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association (PNAHA) ruled that KVHA’s Bantam Selects Tier-II team should play at the Tier-I level. The Bantams tested the Tier-I water in Portland this weekend when they played the Portland Bantam “AAA” team. The Selects lost on Saturday by a score of 3 to 5 and tied on Sunday by a score of 4 to 4. In other local news, the North Puget Sound Hockey League (NPSHL) standings are now posted on the Seattle Jr. Hockey Association web site and our KVHA web site. Check it out and see where our KVHA teams rank in the various divisions. Kent Valley Skating Club presented a spectacular “Holiday Show” at Kent Valley Ice Centre Friday afternoon. The ninety minute show featured over 30 members of the Kent Valley Skating Club in a variety of solo, duet, trio, and group performances. Now! I gotta tell ya, I’m a tough old ornery hockey guy through and through, but turn out the lights, put the spotlight on a graceful sequined figure skater, start the music and I gasp at every spin, jump and graceful move. The Kent Valley Skating Club staged an amazing show at Kent Valley Ice Centre complete with a large backdrop curtain, an announcer, a great sound system, and dual spotlights. Coordinators said it was total chaos behind the curtain. But it didn’t show on the ice. I was really impressed both by the event itself and also by the incredible talent. It was awesome! Next year, we promote this and put more butts in the bleachers… I mean, this was worth watching. You should have been there!
Well, enough of that. Let’s get back to hockey. Game summaries can be reviewed by clicking upon the pdf icon on the upper right. Enjoy!

Squirt Lightning Receive Sportsmanship Award in Weekend Tournament Play
(Click upon the photo for larger view.)
|
|
Kirkland, WA November 25, 2007 – The Thanksgiving holiday weekend got off to a bad start for the KVHA Squirt Lightning Friday afternoon when they played in game #1 of the SnoKing Squirt Rec Tournament at Kingsgate Ice Arena. The Lightning were mauled by the Everett Jr. Silvertips 11 to 1. Elliot Plourde scored the lone goal for the Lightning late in the third period of the tournament’s opening game. The Jr. Tips received 2 penalties in the game. The Lightning were penalty free.
Life on the ice got better for the Lightning on Saturday morning in tournament game #6 when they faced the SnoKing Jr. T-Birds Green team. SnoKing won that game 2 to 0. SnoKing’s 2 goals were both scored within a minute of each other midway through the 2nd period. SnoKing out shot the Lightning 11 to 9. The officials assessed SnoKing 1 penalty and the Lightning none.
The Lightning took the early lead in tournament game #9, their 3rd game of the tournament as they met the SnoKing Jr. T-Birds Grey. Elliot Plourde scored at 57 seconds into the first period and the Lightning had their first lead of the tournament. Tom Speer shot the Lightning lead up to two goals at 4:06 of the first period with an assist from Nicklas Van Halder. The two goal Lightning lead lasted less than two minutes as SnoKing Grey scored two goals to close out the 1st period in a 2 to 2 tie. SnoKing went on to score 3 more goals in the second period and 2 goals in the third to win the game 7 to 2. The Lightning received their first penalty of the tournament during this game while SnoKing took two penalties.
After playing three games, the Lightning were ranked in 7th place and scheduled to meet the SnoKing Jr. T-Birds Blue team, the 8th place team, in tournament game #16. SnoKing led off the scoring in that game. The Lightning tied it up at 6:16 with a goal from Elliot Plourde. SnoKing scored two goals in the second period ending the period with a 3 to 1 lead. The Lightning mounted a comeback in the third period catching the Jr. T-Birds with unassisted goals from Nicklas Van Halder (3:04) and Tom Speer (10:32). It was a tie game for almost 3 minutes until SnoKing spoiled the Lightning’s hopes with goals at 13:03 and 13:49. Each team took 5 penalties during the game. Shots on goal were even.
Although the Lightning lost all four tournament games, they came away with an award, the tournament’s “Sportsmanship” trophy. In presenting the trophy, the tournament director noted that in addition to displaying excellent sportsmanship, the KVHA Lightning had been assessed fewer penalties than any other team in the tournament.
Congratulations Lightning on your Sportsmanship award. The “2007 SnoKing Squirt Invitational Tournament – Sportsmanship Trophy” is on display in the KVHA Office.

Thanksgiving Weekend at Kent Valley
Kent, WA November 25, 2007 – It was a quiet weekend at Kent Valley Ice Centre. Practice was the norm for most KVHA teams. It was an opportunity to reflect back on the past 12 weeks of the season and determine where we’re going for the balance of the season. Much is planned. Some teams are planning to participate in tournaments over the Christmas and New Years holidays. There’s our KVHA 5th Annual Auction on February 2nd. Many teams will be heading into league playoffs, regional and season-end tournaments. We may even be hosting a tournament or two of our own here at Kent Valley Ice Centre. Given all this activity, it was great to be able to pause and catch our breaths over this past weekend.
However, here’s something we might add to our list of activities. I’ve just become aware of an event that we might consider celebrating. It is USA Hockey’s Hockey Weekend Across America.
Hockey Weekend Across America will be celebrated in the United States Feb. 15-17, 2008. While USA Hockey will lead the initiative, it will take the effort of all hockey entities across the country to put programs in place to truly make the effort a success.
In a nutshell, the objective of Hockey Weekend Across America is two-fold:
- Celebrate our game and all involved in the sport throughout the nation using all means possible.
- Provide opportunities for those who haven’t played hockey to try it, resulting ultimately in more people playing our game at all levels.
Following are a couple of links for additional information:

Should KVHA participate? Check it out and let us know what you think.

November 17th & 18th – A Mixed Bag of KVHA Weekend Wins, Losses and Ties.
Kent, WA November 17, 2007 – It was a busy weekend for Kent Valley Hockey Association (KVHA) at home and on the rode. Games were played at Kent Valley Ice Centre, Tacoma, Spanaway, Everett, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Tri Cities. Kent Valley Ice Centre hosted teams from Tacoma, Bremerton, Kirkland, Mountlake Terrace, Spokane and Surrey B.C. The KVHA Squirt Starz Tournament Team hosted the team from Surrey, B.C. and entertained the visiting players and parents with a Saturday spaghetti feed catered by KVIC’s “On the Edge Café.” A Surrey parent said; “We like coming to Kent, why wouldn’t we? Where else do we get treated like this?” I asked mothers of two Spokane Midget “B” players if they were enjoying their stay in Kent. They too said they enjoyed coming to Kent Valley Ice Centre and spending the weekend in the Kent area. So, win or lose, people like coming to Kent Valley Ice Centre and this past weekend was proof of that. We’re making a name for ourselves and it appears to be a good one. Congratulations, Kent Valley Hockey members for being such great hosts. The weekend’s game reports can be viewed by clicking upon the pdf icon on the right. Enjoy!

Tournaments Highlight KVHA Veteran’s Day Holiday Weekend Play
Kent, WA November 13, 2007 – Remembrance Day in Canada and Veteran’s Day in the USA provided holiday tournament opportunities for some of KVHA’s hockey teams. A new flag, raised about a week ago, flew from the flagpole in front of Kent Valley Ice Centre (KVIC), just in time for KVHA and KVIC to show respect for our Nation’s Veterans. The old flag was retired and taken to McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma last week by KVHA member and Air Force Recruiter Chris Seamans for proper disposal. KVHA’s Midget “B” Assistant Coach Mike Hodge gave a Veteran’s Day presentation to students at Kent School District’s Mill Creek Middle School on Friday. Check out Coaches Corner – Coach Mike’s Lessons on our KVHA web site for a write-up and photos.
Over the three-day weekend, or four-day weekend for those that played games on Friday the 9th, KVHA sent five teams across the border to Canada for tournaments with mixed results. Details of tournament games as well as local activity can be reviewed by clicking upon the pdf icon on the right above. Enjoy!

KVHA Weekend Game Summaries for November 10th & 11th |
KVHA November 3rd-4th Game Summaries Kent, WA November 6, 2007 – It was a unique and interesting weekend for KVHA as several of our teams were idle, several were on the road, and one of our U-16 players traveled to Chicago to participate in the Nike Bauer 2007 International Invite, the world’s largest AAA hockey tournament. It was also the weekend where we all asked; “Where are the new jerseys?” The jersey news is frustrating to say the least. News about these and other KVHA activities are available for review by clicking upon the PDF icon on the right. Enjoy!

Kent, WA November 5, 2007 – Our November 10th and 11th “Photo Days” have been cancelled and will be rescheduled once we have a better idea on delivery of those new jerseys. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this unexpected cancellation may have caused. We’ll keep you posted. Trust us, the jerseys are coming…

Kent, WA October 29, 2007 – KVHA weekend number eight brought some spectacular wins on the road and at the Kent Valley Ice Centre (KVIC). Principal among them were the KVHA Midget B’s back-to-back wins over the Eugene Midget B’s. The KVHA PeeWee Tornadoes snuck one past the Seattle Jr. PeeWee Eagles 5 to 4; the KVHA PeeWee Hurricanes defeated the Everett PeeWee Jr. Silvertips Green team by a score of 4 to 2; the KVHA Bantam Tornadoes tortured the Everett Bantam Jr. Silvertips 10 to 0; the KVHA PeeWee Tier-II Selects won back-to-back games at Olympic View and Lynnwood Ice Arena against the Seattle Jr. PeeWee Tier-II; and the KVHA U-16 Selects split with the Portland U-16 Jr. Winterhawks. It was tough to pick the weekend’s lead story. It was a tossup between the Midget B’s, finding their first wins of the season, and the U-16 playing their first games of their season. The nod goes to the Midget B’s and their back-to-back shutout wins over the Eugene Midget B’s. Click upon the pdf icon on the upper right to enjoy reading about this weekens's events.

Kent, WA October 22, 2007 - With seven weeks behind us and some twenty weeks remaining in the Kent Valley Hockey Association’s (KVHA) 2007/2008 Hockey Season it is already looking like a great year for Kent Valley Hockey, and for that matter, for Hockey throughout the Pacific Northwest. KVHA enrollment is up and the Learn to Play Hockey Program is bulging at the seams; an indicator of building a strong foundation for the future. Our hockey teams are competing well with their opposition at all levels rec through rep and players, coaches and parents alike are demonstrating excellent sportsmanship. The teaching of hockey skills is much improved and there is new emphasis on the physical fitness aspect of our sport. These are all important attributes for building the premier hockey program we all desire.
We enjoy documenting our performances, as well as those of our competition, and sharing them with everyone. There is no better place to do this than on the front page of our KVHA web site at www.KentValleyHockey.com. This week we highlight two recreation league performances. The first is in regards to the courageous play of KVHA Squirt Rec Hurricane Defenseman Jonathan Gonzales who answered the call to stand in goal for his team this Saturday in the absence of their regular goalie. Our second highlight, from the same game, focuses on the unselfish performance of Kitsap County’s Squirt Outlaws’ Captain Scotty Perkins. Both are documented in the lead article in the pdf at top right. Enjoy.

Mixed Bag for KVHA in Weekend Play Kent, WA. October 16, 2007 – KVHA’s weekend of hockey could best be summed up as a mixed bag of Halloween candy. The weekend included some delightful wins, a couple of ties and some disappointing losses. The bag also included a bunch of firsts; first goals, first shutouts, first points, first league wins and even first losses. Even the real tough games had their high points. One parent said; “While I appreciated the continuous effort of the players, the highlight of the game for me was the display of good sportsmanship on the coaches’ part, and the ongoing encouragement the coaching staff provided the players!” Good sportsmanship and ongoing encouragement in the face of adversity is a good thing to be demonstrating for our KVHA boys and girls. So, regardless of whether it involved a win, tie or loss, it was another great weekend of hockey for KVHA. Click upon the pdf icon on the right for the full summary of games.

KVHA Fairs Well in Weekend Tiering Games Kent, WA. September 15, 2007 – For the most part, Kent Valley Hockey Association teams faired well during the second weekend of PNAHA “Tiering Games.” While KVHA “Rec” teams remained idle for the weekend, the “Rep” teams found games locally at Kent Valley Ice Centre and on the road. Following are results reported to KVHA headquarters:
Brasch Scores Lone Goal in PeeWee Tier-II Loss Saturday, the KVHA PeeWee Tier-II faced off against the Whatcom Warriors Tier-II team and faced strong opposition from the northern Warriors. The Warriors out shot Kent 33 to 28 and out scored the locals by a score of 6 to 1. Brasch Keegan scored the loan goal and point for the KVHA PeeWees. Coach Gicewicz and his team are looking forward to a re-match.
Petruzzelli Scores Hat Trick in Bantam Tier-II Victory Saturday, the KVHA Bantam Tier-II hosted the Seattle Jr Bantam AA Admirals at Kent Valley Ice Centre. The weather outside the rink was unusually cold for early fall, but inside the Ice Centre Coach Petruzzelli’s Bantams turned up the heat defeating the Seattle Jr. Bantam “AA” Admirals by a score of 7 to 2. Eight KVHA Bantams figured in the scoring. Goalie Fink earned a point by assisting on one of the early goals. Anthony Petruzzelli notched a Hat Trick and assisted on another goal. Other KVHA scoring included; Molly Doner (1 goal), Tommy Peebles (1 goal), Joshua Chambers (1 assist), Connor Bambico (1 goal) and Jermeme Clark (1 goal, 1 assist). Kyle Blondin took home the “Playmaker Award” by assisting on 4 of the team’s 7 goals. Even though the KVHA Bantams put more pucks in the net, the Admirals shot more pucks at the net, out shooting KVHA 33 to 16. KVHA Tier-II PeeWees Dominate SnoKing’s Jr. T-Birds Sunday, the KVHA PeeWee Tier-II team took on the SnoKing PeeWee Tier-II Jr. T-Birds at Kent Valley Ice Centre defeating the Birds by a score of 10 to 2. Keegan Brasch led the scoring onslaught with a “Hat Trick” plus one (4 goals). Brayden Hansen was the playmaker for Coach Gicewicz’s PeeWees by assisting on 3 of the team’s 10 goals. Six other players scored points in the lopsided win; Chad Haywood (1 assist), John Scheref (2 goals, 1 assist), Jesse Howland (1 assist), Michael Julin (2 goals), Matt Seaman (1 goal) and Grant Wulson (1 goal). KVHA out shot SnoKing 29 to 24.
KVHA Bantam Tier-II Control the Ice in 12 to 4 Victory The Whatcom Tier-II Bantams hosted Kent Valley’s Bantam Tier-II team Saturday afternoon and found themselves trying to climb their way out of a deep canyon created by the team from the valley. They might have done better if they had tried scaling the ice on a Mount Baker glacier. Anthony Petruzzelli bombarded Whatcom with six goals, his third “Hat Trick” of the weekend. He also assisted on one other goal. Kyle Blondin (4 assists) and Molly Doner (3 assists) demonstrated the “Playmaker” concept by setting up seven goals between the two. Doner also scored a goal. Other scoring included Erik Jennings (1 goal), Jordan Davidson (1 goal, 1 assist), Tommy Peebles (1 goal), Noah Bloxton (1 goal), Joshua Chambers (1 goal), Connor Bambico (1 assist), Jermeme Clark (2 assists) and Daniel Sosa (1 assist). KVHA fired an amazing 45 shots at the Whatcom goal while Whatcom managed only 20 shots on the KVHA net. The Kent Valley victory came after a morning win over a Seattle Jr. team at Kent Valley Ice Centre followed by a quick trip up I-5 to Bellingham for this game less than 3 hours later. Not a bad performance for such a busy day...
By: Lew Sellers, Director of Communications Kent Valley Hockey Association
Editor’s Note: Other games were played over the weekend but not reported here. Score sheets for those games were not received in the KVHA office in time for compiling and posting the results.

The “Perfect Saturday” at Kent Valley Ice Centre
Kent, WA. September 15, 2007 – Free Hotdogs, Skating and Miniature Golf plus a sold out WHL exhibition hockey game were the highlights of Saturday’s “Welcome Back – Open House” event at the Kent Valley Ice Centre. The weather cooperated and made it possible for an outdoor hotdog barbecue and free miniature golf. Inside, the public skating session was crowded with KVHA members enjoying the free skate. Well over a thousand visitors strolled through the doors of Kent Valley Ice Centre on Saturday to tour the facility, enjoy a public skating session, visit with staff in the Kent Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Center, shop in the just opened Northwest Pro Hockey store, participate in a team practice (8 of them) and watch the WHL exhibition game between the Seattle Thunderbirds and the Everett Silvertips.
Saturday activities began early at 6:50am with a Midget “B” Rep practice, followed by the PeeWee Tier-II, PeeWee Rec, Mite Rec, Mighty Mites, Squirt Rec, and the Squirt Tier-I Tournament Team practices. Out of town but not out of our thoughts, the KVHA Bantam Tier-II traveled to Tri Cities for Saturday/Sunday back-to-back exhibition games against the Tri Cities Bantam “AA” Tier-II team. Coach Petruzzelli and his Bantams came out on top Saturday with 10 to 2 victory in one of the first of many KVHA games to come in the 2007/2008 season.
The only thing that could have made the “Perfect Saturday” more perfect would have been a win by the Seattle Thunderbirds over the Everett Silvertips. But, that didn’t happen as the T-Birds lost in overtime by a score of 3 to 4. But, it was a great game from start to finish.
This “Perfect Saturday” may have been the vision Lexi Doner had in mind years ago when he came to Kent with plans to build the Kent Valley Ice Centre. Saturday, as he rested his arms on the balcony railing over the entrance to KVIC, there was a big smile on his face. “Lew!” He said; “It is a great day for Kent Valley Hockey!” Indeed, it was a perfect day.

NPSHL Reinstates KVHA for League Play
Many of you may not have been aware that KVHA was suspended by the North Puget Sound Hockey League (NPSHL) on August 4th, 2007. The NPSHL is the league in which our KVHA Recreation teams participated during prior seasons. Please note the formal announcement (pdf on the right) that KVHA has been reinstated into the NPSHL for the 2007/2008 season. Some of you may have been waiting for resolution of the suspension before registering with KVHA for the 2007/2008 season. Given that we are now reinstated it is imperative that you register immediately. We need to determine how many teams we will have by this coming Tuesday, September 4th. Registration forms are available by clicking on the KVHA Registration tab on the left. We are excited that KVHA enrollment numbers are higher than at this time last year. Kent Valley Hockey Association Partners with Seattle Starz Hockey Club
By Lew Sellers Kent Valley Hockey Association
Kent, WA. July 20, 2007 - Kent Valley Hockey Association (KVHA) is pleased to welcome the Seattle Starz Hockey Club to this partnership. The partnership allows the Starz to build on the success they've already enjoyed as an independent Spring program and provides KVHA with a Squirt AAA team to join their Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget AAA teams.
The Seattle Starz, established in 2005, are an elite hockey team of 1997 birth year players that just completed a 15-1-2 record winning the Kelowna "Spring Heat" Championship and the Bronze Medal at the prestigious Challenge Cup, held in Vancouver B.C. The third-place finish was the highest attained by any U.S.-based team and was earned against elite teams from throughout Alberta and British Columbia. Recently, several Starz players competed at the Whistler International All-Star Hockey Tournament and helped to win the Gold Medal Championship in the '97 division.
The KVHA-Starz partnership will allow elite hockey players from throughout the Pacific Northwest to pursue the dream of playing for USA Hockey National Championships. Starz Manager, Glenn Kempf, said: "The combined experience of the KVHA leadership team and the passion and commitment of the Starz players and coaches is an ideal match going forward. Our "Players First" philosophy is shared by KVHA President, Lexi Doner, and Executive Director, Les Grauer, and has provided the framework for making this partnership a reality."
KVHA Management, commented: "Having the Starz call Kent Valley home is a vital piece in establishing KVHA as the premier hockey development organization in the Pacific Northwest. We are looking forward to continuing the development of these passionate and committed athletes and to help them reach their full potential"
The team begins training camp on August 24th with the season opener scheduled for October 6th. The Starz will play a series of tournaments and exhibitions against premier teams from Vancouver and throughout British Columbia. The team will practice at Kent Valley Ice Center under the leadership of Head Coach, Adam Kurtenbach.
Please contact Les Grauer, (253) 850-2400 Ext. 12, if you have any questions or desire additional information about the Starz/KVHA partnership.

Kent Valley Hockey Association Inks Joint Operating/ Player Development Agreement with West Coast Hockey Club. By Lew Sellers Kent Valley Hockey Association Kent, WA July 16, 2007 – Kent Valley Hockey Association (KVHA) and West Coast Hockey Club (WCHC) announced a “Joint Operating/Player Development Agreement” today for the 2007/2008 season. The agreement is made to better develop youth hockey players in the Pacific Northwest through the combined use of coaching, facility and player resources. According to the agreement, WCHC and KVHA will combine coaching, facility and player resources for nationally bound teams at the U-16 Major, 1992 (Midget), 1993/1994 (Bantam), 1995/1996 (PeeWee) and 1997 (Squirt) age groups. All 5 teams will be primarily tournament teams, are new to KVHA, and will offer a high-end competitive option for local players.
WCHC has been coached by Mike Anderson. Anderson is the only coach in the Pacific Northwest to take a team to Nationals in recent years. His ‘92 team went to the Tier-II nationals last season. Anderson will coach 3 of the joint teams.
Lexi Doner, President of KVHA, said; “This agreement adds significant value to our association. It is a logical step in our evolution. Initially, we had great facilities but other associations had the top level teams. Consequently, our top players were tempted to leave KVHA for other associations. West Coast has fielded the high-level teams but lacked a permanent facility to call home. Combined, we will field 5 highly competitive tournament teams, enjoy great facilities and coaching, and look to expand with the growth in our facilities in 2008.”
What does this agreement mean to KVHA members?
- KVHA now provides a top-level competitive team option for players,
- Increased resources, enrollment and revenues to the KVHA program,
- Provides a strong running start on use of the 2nd sheet of ice at Kent Valley Ice Centre,
- Top players no longer need to leave KVHA to play on the best teams.
It is expected the joint teams will be immediately competitive with the top teams in other associations in the state. The agreement also combines both parties’ spring programs and players can look forward to a comprehensive joint spring program in 2008 playing under a new combined name “WCHC Kent Valley Elite”.
Please contact Les Grauer, (253) 850-2400 Ext. 12, if you have any questions or desire additional information about this agreement.

The NW Selects are incorporated as a freestanding entity. Named the Northwest Selects Female Hockey Organization, they are incorporated in the State of Oregon and function as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

During closing ceremonies Killian thanked KVHA for inviting Planet Hockey to Kent Valley Ice Centre (KVIC). He also announced that Planet Hockey would return to KVIC for future camps. Killian suggested players study their “Personal Training Guides” and work on their weaknesses. Killian said; “It is he or she with the fewest weaknesses that wins. With less than seven weeks remaining until the new season begins, now is the time to work on those things you need to improve.”
KVHA’s Directory of Hockey Operations, thanked Shawn Killian and the Planet Hockey instructors for providing an excellent camp and “for making it a heck of a lot of fun…” Instructor Petri Suomela (Balsta, Sweden) urged players to focus on their dry-land training. He praised the group for being great students of hockey. He also commented on the five-minute downpour of rain Friday morning. “My friends in Sweden told me that it always rains in the Seattle area. So, I was glad I got to experience five minutes of rain this morning.” Instructor Milan Ladiver (Zilina, Slovakia) pointed out that it was his first trip to the Seattle area and he liked the climate and the people. Martin Groma (Zilina, Slovakia) said; “We hope we will see you all again next year.”
Kiliian presented “Players of the Week” awards to players in each of the two groups. According to Killian, the selection is based on participation, skill improvement and enthusiasm. “We look for players who enjoy every aspect of the camp from the on-ice activities to the dry-land training.” Killian said.
Group “A” Players of the Week, a tie, were Ellise Ward, age 9 and Patrick Dunphy, age 10. Ward said; “I didn’t expect to get picked. It’s cool!”

Former NHL All-Star Dave Babych Visits Planet Hockey at Kent Valley Ice Centre
By Lew Sellers Kent Valley Hockey Association
Kent, WA July 11, 2007 - Former NHL All-Star Dave Babych dropped in on the Planet Hockey SUPER Summer Hockey Camp at Kent Valley Ice Centre this week. Camp attendees were excited as Babych joined them on the ice and skated Planet Hockey drills with them. Babych also spoke to the group during off-ice activities. Mikey Julin, age 12, said: “It sounds like he’s had, and is having, a good hockey life! He skated the drills with us and explained the proper way to do them. It was cool.” Chad Haywood, age 11, said; “He told us about playing against Gretzky and Messier. He also said he shot on Tretiak, the great Soviet goalie, but he didn’t score. He said Tretiak could stop shots other goalies couldn’t stop.”
The visit by Babych was one of the week’s highlights for those attending the Planet Hockey camp. Thanks to Planet Hockey for bringing Dave Babych to Kent Valley Ice Centre. KVHA members are invited to visit www.KentValleyHockey.com for information on other local hockey camps scheduled for this summer.
Babych Profile: Defenceman Dave Babych was born in Edmonton, Alberta on May 23, 1961 and developed into a steady blueliner during his 19-year NHL career. Babych spent three seasons with the Portland Winter Hawks, the last of which he was an all-star before making the leap to the NHL.
Babych went straight to the NHL without a game in the minors, suiting up for 69 contests with the Winnipeg Jets in 1980-81. By 1983, he was an NHL All-Star, and he went on to score 74 points that year, a career high. During his sixth season with the Jets, two of which he was named to the All-Star Team, Babych was traded to the Hartford Whalers for Ray Neufeld.
With the Whalers, Babych didn't reach the offensive highs he hit as a Jet but maintained his solid two way game, providing solid defence and chipping in points on a consistent basis. After Babych's sixth campaign with Hartford, he was on the move again.
When the San Jose Sharks joined the NHL in 1991, they took many players from the Minnesota North Stars as per an earlier agreement and, as a result, the North Stars were permitted to draft players from the rest of the NHL clubs to fill some holes. Babych was claimed by the North Stars and then promptly traded to the Vancouver Canucks during this process.
With the Canucks, Babych joined a blue line corps in need of a steady veteran presence, and he was able to provide. During his third season with the Canucks, they advanced all the way to the Stanley Cup finals and extended the eventual champion New York Rangers to a seventh game. Babych provided three goals and eight points that playoffs.
Babych spent parts of four more years with the Canucks before he was traded again, this time to the Philadelphia Flyers, who felt they were poised for a serious playoff run and wanted a veteran presence on their blueline. The Flyers, however, had a disappointing post-season, and Babych didn't get his second chance at a Cup.
The 1998-99 schedule was Babych's final season in the NHL. He spent most of the year with the Flyers, but was traded, again at the deadline, to the Los Angeles Kings for Steve Duchesne. After one season with the Kings, Babych went on to play three games with Ambri-Piotta of Switzerland's National League during their playoff run before calling it a career at the end of the season.
Dave Babych played 1,195 in the NHL and finished with 723 points.
