Great Hopes for KVHA’s 9th Annual Auction Tonight at ShoWare Center
Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA. February 3, 2012 – If you don’t already have your reservations for Kent Valley Hockey Association’s 9th Annual Fundraising Auction, you’re too late. That boat has already sailed. Our auction coordinators report auction items with a value in excess of $35,000 will be auctioned off tonight. They are expecting over 180 participants to attend and bid for these incredible items. We’re hoping this will be our biggest auction ever. Every year we ask ourselves if the auction format is the best way for KVHA to raise funds. We discuss alternative methods of fundraising like raffles, casino nights, spaghetti feeds, wine tasting, etc. However, we always come back to the auction. I guess it is what we know best. There is no universal opinion among members for an alternative method of fundraising. Besides, we have an investment in software and hardware to help us manage auctions.
I’ve had mixed feelings about the auction over the years. It involves a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes that most members never see and of which they are only vaguely aware. Some members enthusiastically support the auction, some ignore it, some campaign against it and others just simply avoid it like the plague.
Unfortunately, unlike some local associations, we don’t have casinos or bingo games to subsidize the tremendous cost of playing hockey. Nor do we have a local government owned facility that will provide ice time well below the going rate. We must raise additional funds in order to keep our rates competitive with those other local associations. That’s what tonight is all about. See you at the ShoW!
Spring Hockey Details Coming Next Week
KVHA Members are encouraged to keep an eye out next week for details on KVHA’s plans for Spring Hockey. Some KVHA Members have already been approached by other associations in the area, and outside the area, and invited to participate in their spring hockey programs. We encourage you not to commit until you learn what KVHA has to offer. Danny Lorenz and Les Grauer are very close to releasing KVHA’s Spring Hockey program details.
Hockey players in other associations may also want to keep an eye out for the details. We welcome any players from outside our association who might be interested in joining our Spring Hockey program. Feel free to contact us at (253) 850-2400.

Danny Lorenz Surrenders WHL Career Saves Record to the T-Bird’s Calvin Pickard
|
ShoWare Center, Kent, WA., January 28, 2012 — Sunday night, January 22nd, 2012, at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver, British Columbia, Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Calvin Pickard established a new WHL record for career saves in the T-Birds 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Giants.
Pickard made 42 saves in the game to give him 6,959 career saves. Pickard passed former T-Bird Danny Lorenz, who had 6,958 career saves with the T-Birds from 1986 to 1990, to establish the new WHL record for career saves.
Pickard has appeared in 217 games with the T-Birds. He has averaged 32 saves a game for his career.
Pickard, who played 58:52 Sunday night, also set the T-Birds record for most career minutes played by a goaltender. Pickard has now played 12,639 minutes, which is five minutes more than Lorenz, who played 12,634 minutes with the T-Birds from 1986 to 1990. Pickard, by passing Lorenz, is now third in the WHL record book for most career minutes played by a goaltender. Kyle Moir played 12,774 minutes with the Swift Current Broncos from 2002 to 2007 and Kurtis Mucha played 13,708 minutes with the Portland Winterhawks and Kamloops Blazers from 2005 to 2010.
Lorenz presented Pickard with a commemorative plaque at Saturday’s Seattle Thunderbirds game. Seattle Thunderbird fans were pleased to see Lorenz come to center ice to make the presentation. Fans honored the pair with a standing ovation.
KVHA Auction is Friday February 3rd at ShoWare Just a reminder to KVHA members and fans that the 9th Annual KVHA Auction is this Friday night, February 3rd, at ShoWare Center in Kent. Doors open at 6:30pm. Ticket sales, as of Monday, were in excess of 165 and quickly approaching 170.
An Auction “Pre-Pay Check-In” process should speed up the check out process this year. Checking out after the auction, although improved in recent years, can sometimes be a bottleneck. The Pre-Pay at Check-In will help eliminate the long lines at check-out.
It’s SHOWTIME for the folks involved in organizing the annual event as all their many months of work comes together Friday night at ShoWare Center for our association’s major fundraising event. The major remaining task is transferring all the auction items to ShoWare Center and setting up the tables.

KVHA News For January 13th – 16th; The Snow and Ice Edition Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA. January 24, 2012 – Basically, I’m a snow and ice chicken. I refused to budge for 2 days during the recent snow fall. Then, about the time I thought it was safe to venture out, the ice storm hit and took power and heat away from me. That left me in the cold with no power for my computer and no access to the Internet. I just bundled up in bed, turned on a flashlight and read Walter Issacson’s “Steve Jobs” autobiography. So, this edition of KVHA News is the catch-up edition covering games for January 13th through January 16th. Thanks for your patience.
Kent Valley Ice Centre Weathered the Storm While Other Local Ice Rinks Closed Castle Ice had a valid excuse; they had no power for almost 3 full days. Lynnwood Ice Arena and Olympic View Arena both closed because of the snow and ice. But not Kent Valley Ice Centre. The rink was open throughout the week-long snow and ice event. Congratulations to Doug Stewart, Les Grauer and their crews for keeping the doors of Kent Valley Ice Centre open during difficult times. By the way, Doug and Les both drive by Lynnwood Ice Arena and Olympic View Arena on their way to work each day at Kent Valley Ice Centre. The KVIC staff and management are this week’s MVPs.
Replacement Flooring has Arrived at KVIC Several pallets covered with grey tarps at the back of Kent Valley Ice Centre caught my attention earlier this week. So, I walked over to one, lifted the tarp and found a stack of new replacement flooring. Those irritating bulging green floor tiles are soon to be a thing of the past. Halleluiah! Halleluiah, halleluiah, halleluiah, halleluiuiuiuiuiah!

“Harry Smith 15% Discount” Available for Robby Glantz 3-Session Power Skating Clinic KVHA Coach Harry Smith contacted Robby Glantz and was able to get Robby to give KVHA a 15% discount for the June Power Skating Clinic a little early. Currently they only have the 10% early bird discount offered. However, the first few years they offered the clinics at Kent Valley Ice Centre they always came back with another 5% later in the spring. Last year Smith asked for the 15% up front and they gave it to him. So, he did it again this year and Robby Glantz titled it “Harry Smith 15% Discount” on the Power Skating Clinic Flyer. A link to the registration is available on the front page of the KVHA web. Thanks Harry!
Kent Valley’s Colby Bennett Cleared to Play Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA. January 6, 2012 – Colby Bennett, one of the two goalies for Kent Valley’s Midget 18U Tier-II Selects, has been recovering from a head injury since the Selects’ PNAHA league game with the Everett Midget “AA” team back on October 9th, 2011. Danny Lorenz, Head Coach of the Selects, announced earlier this week that Bennett was cleared to play. Bennett was injured during the second period of the October 9th Everett game. He played in 8 games (297 minutes) prior to the injury and had a win/loss/tie record of 2-2-2, a 1.875 goals against average and a save percentage of 87.6%. Bennett missed 20 games during his recovery. He has been with Kent Valley Hockey Association for 8 seasons having first played with the Kent Valley Mite Tornadoes in the 2004/2005 season.
During Bennett’s absence Aaron Mathews was the lone goalie on Coach Danny Lorenz’s roster. Mathews played in four games prior to Bennett’s injury and has played in 20 games since. Matthews has played in a total of 24 of the team’s 29 games (1,005 minutes) and has a win/loss/tie record of 8-10-5, a 3.292 goals against average and a save percentage of 84.5%. Matthews is a six-year veteran of the Kent Valley Hockey Association. He began his career with Kent Valley as part of the “Learn to Play” program during the 2006/2007 season.
Welcome back Colby! Thank you Aaron for 20 consecutive games of service.

9th Annual KVHA Auction Update A quick peek inside the KVHA Auction room reveals an amazing and growing number of items for the February 3rd event at ShoWare Center. Most teams have completed their auction procurement commitments and are now focusing on the sale of tickets. Co-Chairs Amy Cook and Vicki Bloss are encouraging KVHA Members to focus on selling tickets to friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers.
This year's auction should be fun, with plenty of exciting items, from flying lessons, cooking lessons in Pike Place Market, a Kindle, iPod, Xbox 360 Kinect Bundle, Smart Phone, flat screen TV, spa services, and much more. The Thunderbirds' mascot, Cool Bird, is joining us for an evening of silent and live auction, complimentary wine and passed appetizers, catered dinner, and fun.

Jeff Randall Will be the Auctioneer at KVHA’s 9th Annual Auction February 3rd at ShoWare Center Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA. December 8, 2011 – I was excited this week to learn that Jeff Randall will be the auctioneer for our February 3rd KVHA 9th Annual Auction. I've known Jeff for many years and worked with him at the Tacoma Rockets as well as numerous other hockey events in our area. He was the excitement behind the Tacoma Stars Soccer Club success in the Tacoma Dome several years ago and he brought excitement to the Tacoma Rockets hockey games. You may have seen Jeff in recent years as part of the broadcast team for the Sea Fair Hydroplane Races.
Jeff is more than just a hockey fan. He also plays hockey in the GSHL Adult Hockey League and occasionally drops by the office to say hello when he has an early game. He loves hockey...
On a personal note - Years ago, Jeff had a contract dispute with the Tacoma Rockets over his Public Address announcing job with the Tacoma Rockets. Jeff and the Rockets couldn't come to resolution, so Jeff resigned and left the Rockets to find someone else. At the time, I was the Rockets’ score keeper. Bruce Hamilton, owner of the Rockets, was aware that I had public address announcing experience with the Seattle Breakers and Thunderbirds. So, he announced to the local news media that I would be the replacement for Jeff Randall. However, Hamilton forgot to mention it to me. I showed up at work one morning and my secretary congratulated me on my new assignment with the Rockets. I was in total disbelief until she showed me the Tacoma News Tribune article. I was stunned to say the least! Now, I consider myself a fairly good PA announcer, very official and stoic. Jeff, on the other hand, was an exciting announcer that controlled the crowd’s enthusiasm, brought them to their feet, inspired them and got them going. My announcing was very dry and official. I would have been good at giving directions at the local airport. I ended up announcing the game that night and another game two nights later. I was so disliked by the fans that Hamilton caved in to Randall's demands and hired him back. I've always felt that I was instrumental in advancing Jeff's career...

KVHA Auction Ticket Sales Getting Strong Support From Members Kent Valley Ice Centre, Kent, WA. November 17, 2011 – Auction Co-Chairs, Amy Cook and Vicki Bloss, expressed their gratitude for the support they’ve received from KVHA members for the 9th Annual KVHA Auction. Strong early ticket sales are just one indication that the auction is on track to be the best ever.
Auction MVP Honors – November Most Valuable Player honors go to Jill Mudge (Mite Tornadoes) and Rena Sullivan (KVHA Registrar) for their tremendous support and dedication this month. Both have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Thanks also to the individual team auction coordinators and their work at the team level. Strong teamwork now, will result in a big win for KVHA on February 3rd.
Ticket Sales – Each team has been asked to sell 30 tickets. That averages about 2 tickets per player. While the Auction Committee welcomes and encourages KCHA members to purchase tickets and attend the February 3rd auction, they are encouraging teams to focus on selling tickets to someone other than KVHA members. Co-Chair, Vicki Bloss, said; “Our hope is that selling tickets to non-members helps take the pressure off parents who already pay a great deal for hockey. Ideally, the bulk of our auction income should come from outside the KVHA membership.” Bloss’ advice seems to be working as some members have reported selling tickets to co-workers, business associates, customers, neighbors and relatives. So, sell those tickets.
Procurement – December 5th is the deadline for members to turn in their auction procurement items. If the stack of procurement forms in the “In Basket” is any indication, we’re well on our way to having a wide selection of auction items. Extra procurement, large or small, is appreciated. Small items can be packaged with others to make an attractive and sellable item. Here are just a few of the items that have been procured so far:
“Something for everyone at all prices!”
Wine Cellar (25 to 30 bottles) NY Islanders Hockey Jersey Several Golf Packages Seattle Thunderbirds related items Seattle Sounders and Seahawks related items A variety of hockey related items
